Frequently Asked Questions

All About Niches

What are niches?

Niches are secure, sealed, storage spaces for funeral ashes. We provide two sizes, single and double.

The new Memorial Garden at Arley Hall & Gardens is being developed by The Walled Garden Company™, the trading entity of The Walled Garden Group Limited.

What are the alternatives?

Cremation is now the dominant UK funeral form, and the funeral industry is not providing suitable infrastructure for post-cremation burial and memorialization to replace the traditional destinations of the churchyard and cemetery.

To address this problem, the Company is developing walled memorial gardens within the curtilage of Stately Homes. Our sites, with landscaped gardens designed by the UK’s leading gardeners, match the aspirations and hopes of bereaved families.

Only 50 years ago 35% of people were cremated, and the fundamental change in volume of demand means that there is now a supply vacuum, with no socially established destination point of interment.

Traditional burial

Prices for a traditional burial plot vary across the country, and the occupancy period can also vary,
often between 50 and 99 years.

Set out below are some of the basic costs of purchasing a grave plot in the Trafford area, with the
range of costs for a headstone if purchased from the Co-op.

Exclusive Right of burial – allocated earthen grave £1595
To erect a headstone £140
Interment £1360 ( Source )
Cost of headstone from £675 to £3145 ( Source )

Masterplan

The masterplan for the whole garden shows it to be designed in four quarters with each quarter representing one season. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. The seasons of the year reflect the stages and cycle of life. However great care has been taken to ensure that all parts of the garden will always look good throughout the year

Which season will you start with?

The first garden will the Summer garden

What is the thinking behind the layout of the Summer Garden?

It is centred on a large circular lily pond. The circle represents the sun and the perfection of heaven. It also connects with the Holy Well. The pool lies in the centre of a square lawn which is studded with tall columns of beech. The columns will reflect in the water. They will also extend into some of the surrounding flower beds. The intention is to create a space that is beautiful and contemplative but also impressive and even slightly monumental
